Buckie gig -more than one instrament to the amp question

The band played last Friday at the beginning of the Keswick convention in Buckie. The praise was good with a strongly reeptive congregation.

I have been looking at how to have two basses available to play live without disconnecting from the guitars and getting that unprofessional noise. I have a two standard jack cable that goes to one cable.

But when i tried it it didnt work.

My next plan was to use a small mixer for both guitars then send the signal from which ever instrament to the effects and back to the mixer before on to the bass amp and Pa .

My trial run through last night at home worked well and looks like a GOOD method.

I then re checked the cable and discovered that it worked as well.!

Typical.

Why Worship is not working well today?

Having been out on the road with some mates I was encouraged by the link I found via John Greenshields to Kenny Lamm and his 9 reasons people dont join in worship singing.

I am no old boy with a few years experinece in the front and at the back of corporate worship and I do see some common recognition to the things Kenny has said in Church leaders website. My thanks to him.

They dont know the songs

Songs not suitable for that gathering

Wrong key for gathering ( Too high?) (or even shy men)

Potential singers cannot hear those around them

Worship singing seen as a performance spectator event

Congregation feel they are not expected to sing

Book of songs to fluid song list issues

Leaders of worship ad lib too much

Worship leaders not connected to congregation

As I am involved in worship i take recognition of these comments. I hope others do too!

However . I am encouraged in the Highlands of Scotland, people are, taking recognition to music worship some refreshing their approach others discovering for the first time a wealth of song to use.

what’s going on

I had a really good chat yesterday with a couple of folks about worship and praise in the Highlands. Over the years I have hoped for progress in developing a clearer praise worthy set up in the highlands . This was part of Hiland praise.

I am encouraged with this first chat and hope to express progress in the future.

Highland challenge

I am still concerned for those in the highlands of Scotland who feel isolated with regard to Christian fellowship and getting together with like minded people.

Its not all about big venues and large worship meetings but it is good to engage with like minded folks.

Is there a need for a communication that helps?

Views of Ayr trip

Some pictures from recent trip to Ayr.
For some time I have been concerned for the fellowship and communion of Christians in the Highlands. I have lived in Ross shire Sutherland and Caithness and have felt there is a need for some local regional coordination be it electronic or physical to link up Christians for support, prayer and discussion. I believe this would be for those who are like minded and can tolerate others in different denominations or theologies. The recent questionnaire is to gauge this need for those in the Highlands and the results may help plot out a work. I would value your input in the questionnaire and separately.

As I said last week its too early to say what is done to support the work but already I am seeing clear needs for example the daily devotion or questions to consider during the day.

At some point it would be good to clarify any requirements.

Quarterly rallies? Daily thought for the day, Questions to consider? Local buddies for prayer... Local small worship sessions.
Keep coming back. Subscribe and share please.

Come on then, time to help me...!

Help me with the ...

Highland Scotland Questionnaire

Thank you for taking part in the questionnaire.
You should be in the Highlands of Scotland to complete this request.

Hiland Praise would like to ask you to help us with a questionnaire covering Church, Fellowship Faith building and Worship.

I am trying to ascertain the level of isolation and see what can be done to help those in geographically isolated places in the Highlands of Scotland.  Some research was carried out some 10 years ago and I thought it time we sought to find out what it is like now in the Highlands.

You responses are private and used in an acumulative manner. If you provide your e mail address we will keep it safe and use it only as agreed. We will not share the address with any other organisation. However you should know that Google is the provider of the blog and Google forms where the questionnaire is centered and will have access to the details.

If you have seen this questionnaire, or been sent it from more than one person we ask that you only complete it once. However please feel free to send it to others so they can take part. The more we have the better our spread of results will be.

Help with a questionnaire

In a few days I hope to provide the link to a questionnaire where I am looking for feedback from those particularly living in the Highlands of Scotland. I am seeking information about faith, worship and communion with Christians in their area.

It will only take a few minutes and I am looking for as many responses as possible. So if you could pass on the link to those in the Highlands...that would be great.

Please come back to get the google link.

Worship just Psalms ?

A few years ago in Scotland some Presbyterian denominations had a challenge about Worship music. The feeling of using new worship songs or old worship songs instead of purely the Psalms becoming a bit of a struggle.

Also there was the wishes of some to use musical instrument to accompany the worship. By the way I am not knocking Presbyterians stay with me.

Background
Opposition to Hymns and instruments is not restricted to one arm of the Presbyterian Church. But James Begg was a promoter of the use of Psalms and no instruments. Robert Murray McCheyne was a Hymn writer who found it difficult to leave the establish Church but did so to support the Free Church ethos.

In 1866 the Free Church voted 3 to 2 for the use of hymns. In 1869 Begg was unsuccessful in curtailing Hymns. In 1872 the Church accepted the “New Hymn book“ 213 votes to 61. In 1877 Prof Bruce wished to have their “Own Free Hymn Book” with Begg supporting a defence of no change position.

Then in 1892 the assembly with drew permission to use instruments for worship and uninspired Hymns in public worship.

The Free Church of Scotland is know for its “Psalm only” singing in Scottish Churches.

In recent years individual Free Churches of Scotland have had the liberty at session level to decide if the local Church would sing only Psalm or include Hymns and spiritual songs. There are about dozen who now incorporate more than psalms in their worship. John MacDonald (The Apostle of the North) 1779-1849 Ferrintosh, was a Gaelic spiritual verse writer. Interesting to have an hymn writer in a Psalm singing denomination.

So in recent years when one church was unable to command a final order on worship in its church it asked its local churches to decide for themselves whither to use other songs, and instruments.

I found that really interesting that a good Congregational/Baptist principle was used to aid the Presbyterian churches outcome. Let the local church decide.

Worship on Sunday...

You know I have been involved in Worship music for over 40 years and yesterday I was blessed to see the new beginnings of what could be great worship in the future at the Church I am connected to. Now let me say I have been and played in Presbyterian churches, played and or led in Methodist type Churches and Also Baptist Churches on both sides of the border and I again was reassured that the worship music can be delivered and have an impact on the Church service. Don't get me wrong the preaching was excellent.

Here is what I think makes the difference to worship music (unaccompanied or not)

  • Focus on God - the receiver of the praise
  • Individual commitment to make it work and to focus on the God of worship
  • A praying community of worship players
  • A congregation accepting the direction of worship

It helps if you

Are in tune instrument wise and spiritually
Arrive on time for set up
Have the appropriate music in the key to be delivered if you can not memorise the music you are playing
Listen to fellow musician and go with the dynamics that are happening from the lead

Be able to adjust to any changes directed from the lead.

Smetimes there is no difference in preparation but the worship just excels, yesterday was one of these days. I am sure God was honoured in our time of praise. Are you looking forward to the next time?

Worship as in Music

Interestingly I am coming across a lot of people who are not in to the Contemporary worship style in Churches today. Is it the repetition the chanting less melody or is it
the "second rate" musically quality?

Church of Scotland

Church of Scotland votes in favour of allowing ministers in same sex civil partnerships

Church of Scotland logoThje Church of Scotland has voted in favour of allowing people in same sex civil partnerships to be called as ministers and deacons.
The historic decision was made by the General Assembly on the Mound in Edinburgh today, where the motion was passed by 309 votes in favour and 182 against.
The outcome is the culmination of years of deliberation within the Church. The motion has faced a series of debates and votes before the final decision was arrived at this afternoon. This included 31 of the Church’s presbyteries endorsing the move to 14 who opposed it.
This means the Church has adopted a position which maintains a traditional view of marriage between a man and woman, but allows individual congregations to ‘opt out’ if they wish to appoint a minister or a deacon in a same sex civil partnership."

I am not making comment on the theology but taking note similar to the Free Church of Scotland with regard to Worship when it comes to a difficult answer the local congregations are given the authority to choose!

Is this not a good Baptist principle ?  the local church decides and not some authority out with the locality.
